Impact on Education

Pre-K / Elementary

Although it might not seem like it, even elementary school kids are already influenced by collective intelligence. Students are instructed in working with a computer and typing at a very early age thus resulting in global interest and awareness. Young students are stimulated by a broad range of sources across the net, to feel and engaged in the whole world. Ever since the media became popular the youth has been included. From the moment children can read they are brought in contact with other technological things like mobile phones, ipods, etc.
Communication is also taught simultaneously at any early age, which also encourages a broader range of thinking. However, specific to pre-k or elementary, the notion that one can work with one another whether that is just sharing building blocks or doing a book report together, it instills that collaborative idea in the child's head that prepares them for higher education where they will encounter more sophisticated means of collective intelligence and collaboration such as the Horizon Project.


Middle/ High School


As it gets started in elementary school it continues in Middle and High school, it becomes increasingly important that students to know how to work with all the sources that are available to them. These days it is very difficult to keep up with classmates if you have no knowledge of technology as we are merging fast into the more discussion based, seminar type of learning experience, which requires extensive communication, like the Horizon Project; an extremely tangible example for us students in high school. Although there is no "Horizon Project" designated specifically for middle schoolers, it has come to my attention that because of the growing communication mechanisms available, even younger people are beginning to engage in projects that involve work on "wikis" or simply just blogging. While it may not be "international collaboration" that is the Horizon Project, it still paves the way for that imminent collaboration that breeds collective intelligence. From personal experience, my school goes from grades 7-12, incorporating both junior high school and regular high school, and due to the advanced technology that now exists, the seventh and eighth graders that my teachers instruct as well as us, are now working on the wiki, making videos, and commenting on blogs; things that were not available to us when we were in seventh and eighth grade. But now, since collective intelligence and technology is proliferating at an outstanding rate, the trend can only continue in that collective intelligence will determine the course work of all grades, most specifically junior high school and high school.

College Education


Nowadays, collective intelligence such as wikipedia is still one of the most useful resources of education thanks to technology development. In the area of college education, its significance has been increased remarkably as well. Most of universities have enough computers and resources for the students. They have considerably more opportunities to use collective intelligence for their study in Japan, yet collective intelligence is important for not only students but also professors. In Japan, some famous universities are conducting an interesting project called Global-COE pogram( Global Centers Of Excellence Program) from 2007. The aims of this program are to create excellent centers of education, which will work globally, and educate young researchers, which will be competent in international settings.

Selected universities have their own assignments such as humanities, life science, and so on, and do their research on the web sites. Professors of the universities carry out their individual research related to their main assignments and share the information with other members. As a result of it, they can do more advanced research on their main assignments. Their work is evaluated regularly by the committee of Global COE program, mainly in terms of teamwork and possibilities of high accomplishment. Therefore, this makes them work hard and thoroughly. Moreover, this research also entails good use of lessons in the universities actually; a pertinent example of effective collective intelligence.
Collective intelligence is formed by the collaboration of a lot of people, so it also encourages to work as a group even which is worldwide thanks to the internet. We can share our knowledge on the internet without feeling physically distant. On the other hand, there are often controversial arguments surrounding topics, especially about history. Although there are some issues, collective intelligence will contribute to the worldwide education.

On another note, seminar based discussions are becoming increasingly important in college. On a smaller scale this is a prime example of collective intelligence "in action." When in a discussion based classroom in any liberal arts college one is bound to find a very diverse body of students, all representing their own opinions and ideas regarding this issue at hand. By running the class this way, the professor is allocating time for collective intelligence to occur. One may even call it a process that starts in the younger grades, even if it means just participating in small group discussions. The art of discussing, interacting, and collaborating is what paves the way for things like the Global-COE program, or the Horizon Project, or programs like these in the future. Eventually, the pedagogical experience will be dominated by Collective Intelligence, especially in higher education.
